Warning Signs That Something Isn’t Right After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery usually goes off without a hitch. However, before you go in for cataract surgery, you need to make sure that you know the warning signs to watch out for. If you experience any of these warning signs after surgery, be sure to get help right away.

#1 Loss of Vision

After you have surgery on your eyes, it is natural for you not to be able to see like you did before. It is natural for your eyes to be sensitive. What should not happen though is you should not love your vision. You should still be able to see. If you feel like your vision is worse, or that you can't see at all, contact your doctor right away. Your doctor should be contacted right away if there are any changed to your vision.

#2 Nausea & Vomiting

Next, your eye surgery should not cause you to feel nauseous or cause you to vomit. It should also not cause you to cough. Vomiting and coughing can put unnecessary pressure on your eyes when your body is supposed to be healing. That is why you should contact your doctor right away if you're experiencing vomiting or coughing.

#3 Flashes of Light

When you look around, you shouldn't see flashes of lights. For example, if you feel like there are little pieces of light that are dancing around your eyes, kind of like light dancing off the water or fireworks. If you experience this, once again, call your doctor right away and schedule a follow-up.

#4 Strong & Persistent Pain

Finally, you may feel discomfort after surgery. However, you should not feel really strong and persistent pain following your surgery. Any pain that you feel should be something that you can handle with over the counter pain medication. If you are not able to handle the pain with over the counter pain medications, you need to reach out to your doctor. This is not normal, and your doctor will be able to get to the root of your pain and help you manage it in a healthy manner.

If you experience any warning signs, reach out to your doctor right away. It is always okay to reach out when you feel that something is not right after surgery. Your doctor may give you a list of additional warning signs; remember, it is okay to reach out to your doctor if you are not feeling okay. They can let you know if you are feeling a normal side effect or if you are experiencing a complication from the surgery.
